Swim Style

As a female, one of the most dreaded pieces of clothing to wear is a swimming suit. When a vacation or summer rolls around you are almost never feel ready to flaunt your swimsuit body. Many people feel the pressure to get a small bikini to show off what they got. Newsflash, bikinis don’t look flattering on most people and the last thing you want is to feel self-conscious while baring all! With the kickoff of summer this upcoming weekend, find yourself a suit that suits you!

Spend money on a great suit. Once you have seen the benefits of spending a little more on a swimming suit it will change your life forever. The fabrics, structures and support really change with the price tag. Also, don’t be afraid to tailor your suit. Find a suit that fits you at your biggest part and have it taken in, it’s not just for short people!

I found this periwinkle Badgley Mischka one-piece at Swim and Sport. Due to the low cut nature of the bathing suit I had to have this altered to ensure no mishaps on the beach. I got it taken in in the shoulders and near my ribs for the best fit. Alterations took about a week and costed $54, swim material is harder to work with so it can be more expensive.

This one-shoulder Miraclesuit, fabulously named Jena, was from Nordstrom. This is my show stopper swimming suit and I get complimented every time I walk out of the house in it. The one-should makes me feel so chic on the beach. When tanning I pull the strap down and wear the suit as a strapless so I don’t get a weird line. Also when paired with a simple black strapless dress it looks very elegant, you can’t even tell the one-shoulder is from your suit.

Everyone needs a “tanning suit” it’s that suit that you wouldn’t actually wear into the water but looks beautiful on the beach. This one is from a swim boutique in Edina called Nani Nalu, they pick out suits for you based on fit. Due to the fact that the majority of the suit is white, wearing it in the water, especially river or lake water, would gradually turn it yellowish. It is for this reason that I only wear this suit to catch some rays and sip a cocktail.

If you are feeling self-conscious with your current beach figure try finding suits with ruching. Ruching can hide many unwanted areas. Another tip for hiding certain areas is choose the right cover up. Dresses are always a great way to style your suit and stay cool during the summer. They can give you shape while hiding your arms or legs and add a splash of color. Don’t forget to think about your straps! It can look awkward if you have random straps or lines hanging out of your dress. So find a coverup that looks good with your suit as well as alone!

Lately I have also loved pairing my suit with a romper. They are easy to slip on and very comfortable. The most important part of a romper is the torso length, if it fits you in the torso it will look much better on you. For chilly days or nights you can also put a light or sheer cardigan over your romper. If you are wearing a shorts romper I recommend wearing a longer open front cardigan that hits at a similar place as where your shorts end.

For a more bohemian feel pair your suit with a kimono and flower headband.

Don’t forget to accessorize your swimwear! Hats, headbands, sunnies, sandals and even a little jewelry can add a lot to your beach attire. Don’t go too over the top but add subtle accents to enhance your look. If you plan on adding jewelry to your beach look go with one type so it doesn’t overpower your bathing suit. For example, pick between a ring, earrings or a necklace don’t do it all!

J.Crew has done it again; they have redesigned their jeans to perfection. They have not only added stretch to the toothpick jeans, they have also added new styles and washes throughout their collection.

It’s no secret I am a J.Crew lover. I have owned a few different pair of their jeans in the past but mostly boyfriend type jeans. J.Crew skinny’s are now on a whole new level, from distressed to black to my personal favorite the parker wash.

The lime eyelet tank is also a J.Crew sale rack find. When trying on and buying blouses from J.Crew make sure you always try them on and don’t be afraid to try down a size. Boxy is the trend but can make you look bigger than you are. I can go down up to 2 sizes in J.Crew tops just to eliminate the extra fabric around the mid section.

This summer’s go to weekend outfit is a romper. I love that they are an easy and complete look in a matter of minutes. They are light weight, no fuss and come in great colors and patterns. Layer a vest for a less casual outfit or for cooler days pair with a chambray shirt for a grungier look or a cardigan for the preppie look.

Since this item is a little bit trendier I got mine from Forever 21. They are under $15 and come in solids as well as prints. I like the strapless ones because they are easy to slip on and you don’t have to worry about tan lines when out in the sun or on the boat.

They are a great summer add-on to your closet and may be going on end of season clearance. Stock up while you can!

Carefully selected staple colors can really take an outfit up a notch. This summer season my go to colors are white, nude and turquoise.

Add white to make it bright. White bottoms lighten your outfit and make you appear to have a sun kissed glow. Whether it’s shorts, trousers or jeans have your whites bright and out in the sunshine. If you are feeling daring, try an all white look – just make sure your whites are the same shades!

Nude shoes lengthen when worn with shorts, dresses or skirts. There is no choppy ending with a nude sandal and a good pair will make your legs look much longer. These wedges from Clarks are my favorite purchase of the season. They have air technology and are comfortable all day long. Try a patent nude when going for an evening look.

Something about turquoise makes me think of summer and the sea. Turquoise can mix and match with a variety of other colors. It can also act as a eye-catching contrast if you choose a turquoise accessory for a statement piece.

I apologize for the delay! I know it’s just about a month late but a baby shower, moving into a new place and planning my upcoming birthday bash left me no time! Here is the breakdown of all things baby.

Prep: A couple of weekends before the big day I invited my helpers to join me at the venue and planned it all in less than two days. Friday night started with wine and lists. Followed by Saturday shopping and decoration construction. Thank you to Barb, Cindy and Linda for all of your help and letting me direct you all weekend! This beautiful party was made possible by all of their hard work.

People: Party-goers traveled from near and far to celebrate Kelli and Baby E. Kelli and I were joking beforehand that it was the wedding part two with all of our loved ones attending. Kelli and her friend from Atlanta joined us on Friday night and spent the weekend enjoying all that Minnesota has to offer these days; snow and cold. We gathered friends and family from all stages of life. It’s always so fun to see everyone in one place.

Decorations: When making my decor choices I always like to try new things and mix unique components together. One of the main projects was a fabric garland that hung on the fireplace mantle. the garland was made of multiple fabric strips in like colors (yellow and grey) knotted together for bulk. We also used these fabric pieces to accent the family deer that reside in our basement! The other main focal point was branches adorned with paper dots. These turned out amazing, they were whimsical, cheery and the perfect touch for drawing everyone’s eye up. Onesies, chevron, elephants and E’s were also apart of our decor and completed the look!

Food and Games: We featured my new favorite food, lettuces wraps. We have the best recipe that includes hoisin and soy sauce, rotisserie chicken, carrots, onions, peanuts and basil. Cafe Latte cake is always the perfect dessert and it certainly did not disappoint! Of course, it wouldn’t have been a shower without games. We guessed baby foods and the due date, played The Price is Right and Scattergories and had a wonderful time. Winners took home bottles of Barefoot Wine!

Thank you to all who help and all who attended! We had a fabulous time and couldn’t ask for better friends. I can’t wait to welcome Baby E into the world and embrace my new title, Auntie Jenna.

Tradition

There is one day throughout the year that still holds all of the magic that the world has to offer. That day is Christmas. It’s not just about the presents and things, it’s about traditions. What I love most about Christmas is that everything begins and ends with family. Our family of four has grown to five and will soon become six of us celebrating this magical day.

In our family, the traditions begin right away on Christmas Eve. We have dinner and spend time with extended family at my Aunt’s house. Later in the evening we go back to my parents house and we all sleep under the tree. Yes, all five of us have an air mattress and we spend the night under the glow of our Christmas tree. Even the four dogs find their spots on the futon or the end of the bed.

My excitement on Christmas morning cannot be contained. I still wake up by six thirty anxious for the day and already preparing for a nap later! After cinnamon rolls and presents, youngest to oldest, we find ourselves heading across the street. My dad plays Santa for the neighbor kids while the rest of us enjoy champagne and whiskey. Following Santa we have breakfast and relax all day, usually with movies! This year we had dinner guests, amazing ribs, strong drinks and a good time!

This magic only comes once a year and can only be called Christmas.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Looking back on my first year as a blogger I can only thank everyone for joining me on this journey. I’ve had so much fun welcoming all of you into my closet and sharing what style means to me.

I know in recent months – okay three months – I’ve taken a little time off but I hope 2014 brings many more blog posts. Between a new job, a new place to live and finding my groove, blogging has seemed rather difficult lately. I am dedicated to making Stylessence a priority in 2014. This is my creative outlet and I truly enjoy making my passion a part of your lives.

Here’s to a stylish 2014, Happy New Year!

One thing I wish upon winter is that it be over after Christmas. This week Minnesota entered a ‘deep freeze’ and let me tell you I picked a great week to do a photo shoot… burr! Between the chilly fingers and static hair this shoot did not last long. Now I know why all bloggers live in California or Texas… it’s always great photo weather and you only have to put on a jacket to make a statement.

This outfit was inspired by wish lists and holiday styling. I wore this outfit to Christmas Eve, minus the handbag I unwrapped Christmas morning, and stayed toasty throughout the festivities. Chambray is the new black for making your winter wardrobe warmer. You can layer it under sweaters, cardigans, jackets and vests for a preppy chic look. It pulls everything together and gives you a well rounded look.

Everyone have a safe and happy new year!

Making Spirits Bright

Holiday parties on the horizon? Make a statement with any style.

Sophisticated Sweater-

(Necklack: J.Crew, Jeans: 7 for all Mankind, Sweater: J.Crew, Boots: Dolce Vita , Earrings: Icing, Jacket: J.Crew)

The preppy look with a little spice. This look mixes neutrals, oxblood and powder pink to create a palette worth wishing for. Pop holiday colors in your accessories, don’t try to go overboard on being ‘festive’ this season. Stay true to holiday cheer but keep it simple.

Chic Chevron-

xmas 2(Chambray: Madewell, Boots: Madewell, Sweater: Madewell, Purse: Madewell, Earrings: J.Crew, Jeans: Gap)

Mountain lady meets city slicker in this chic holiday look. Layer chambray shirts with chunky sweaters and touches of leather. For extra texture work in some animal print, metal and jewels. I’ve been making the best chic sweater finds at Madewell, they have great colors, textures and prints.

Lumber Jack Leather-

xmas 3

(Ring: H&M, Leggings: TopShop, Watch: Marc Jacobs, Vest: Madewell, Sweater: Madewell, Heels: Madewell)

If rustic is a little bit more your style always go for buffalo plaid. It comes in all colors and sizes perfect for anyone on your list. Pleather leggings, studded heels and cowl necks get you into the spirit with a little sass.

Blackout-

xmas 4

(Dress: Top Shop , Booties: Aldo, Bracelet: Alex and Ani, Jacket: Rene Derhy Elliset)

For a holiday show stopper stick with black and accent with metallics. Touches of fur are always an elegant accent to top off your look.

What style is calling out to you this season?

Wonderful Wishing

Here’s to a holiday wishlist full of wonderful things!

Wishlist

I feel like throughout the year I go about my business and suddenly Christmas is here again. I seem to always forget to think of ideas early, write them down and try not to purchase them myself! I’m all about instant gratification, much like the rest of my generation, and sometimes it is difficult to think of things that I wouldn’t buy myself and would make life better. Yes, sometimes it’s nice to get something that you just don’t want to spend your own money one but it’s hard to think of those ideas when someone puts you on the spot.

Next year my goal is to try to think of things early, write them down and avoid purchasing things myself. This will ensure the magic of the holiday remains year after year.

This year I want: a beaded fringe necklace, one floral swimming suit, a plaid cargo jacket, my first pair of Hunter boots and a leopard leather Fossil bag, just to name a few!

What’s on your holiday wishlist this season?
